The Tourism and Foreign Affairs Councillor of the Andalusian Government, Arturo Bernal, has presented what will be the first Guide to Pilgrimages in the province, a project that, together with the Provincial Council of Huelva, reinforces the commitment of the Andalusian Government to promoting religious tourism in the community.
The event was attended by the President of the Provincial Council of Huelva, David Toscano; the Government Delegate of the Junta de Andalucía in Huelva, José Manuel Correa; the Territorial Delegate of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Teresa Herrera, as well as mayors such as Begoña Dorado from Palos de la Frontera and Pilar Miranda from Huelva.
During his speech, the Councillor highlighted one of the most genuine expressions of the identity of Huelva, such as the pilgrimages. «Today, we have celebrated our roots, our faith, and our culture, in an event that marks a before and after in the way we showcase to the world the richness of our traditions,» he said.
«The pilgrimages of Huelva are a living testimony of our history, guardians of a legacy passed down from generation to generation through songs, clothing, gastronomy, and the hospitality of our towns. With 75 pilgrimages spread across 69 municipalities, Huelva stands as a beacon of devotion and joy, and therefore, this event has served to underline the importance of making known and preserving this treasure,» he detailed.
Therefore, from the Junta de Andalucía and the Provincial Council of Huelva – he continued – «we reaffirm our commitment to promoting religious tourism, a sector that reinforces our identity, generates employment, boosts the economy, and strengthens cohesion among our municipalities with over two million annual participants.»
For Arturo Bernal, the presentation of the first Guide to Pilgrimages of Huelva is an essential tool for those who wish to know and experience these celebrations up close. «We want this guide, along with the audiovisual promotion campaign, to become a reference and an open window to the world, showcasing the essence of our land,» he recalled.
In this sense, he highlighted the collaborative work of mayors, councilors, brotherhoods, entities, and citizens who have made this project possible. «Their dedication and effort have been crucial in consolidating Huelva as a pioneer and leader in religious tourism and in the preservation of popular culture,» he emphasized, underscoring this new chapter of promotion and strengthening of traditions.
Cultural richness
On the other hand, the President of the Provincial Council, David Toscano, highlighted that the Guide to Pilgrimages of Huelva is «a top-level document that captures the cultural richness and tradition represented by these festivities.» In this regard, he emphasized that it is «an essential tool» to «showcase the various pilgrimages that take place, many of which have a deep connection with the history and identity of the towns of Huelva.»
Furthermore, he noted that this initiative «seeks to promote tourism, inviting both residents and visitors to discover the uniqueness of each of these celebrations.» The President of the Provincial Council emphasized «the importance of citizen participation in these festivities, which are not only a moment of religious devotion but also an opportunity to strengthen coexistence and the sense of community.»
Finally, he highlighted «the commitment of the Provincial Council of Huelva to support and promote these traditions,» after which he clarified that the guide will be updated periodically to include new pilgrimages and activities.
