ARMILLA (GRANADA), 2 (EUROPA PRESS)
The former President of the Government José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero highlighted on Thursday «the speed of the reaction» of the central government, which, after the announcement of new tariffs by the United States, «has done its homework» with a «support cushion» that he pointed out will be «very important» for the Spanish economy. He also emphasized the work that Pedro Sánchez is doing in response to the European Union’s preparations for Donald Trump’s recent protectionist measures.
All of this, according to Zapatero, was mentioned in response to questions from the media during his participation in the II International Feminist Congress Ciudad de Armilla, in the metropolitan area of Granada, «after witnessing one of the most ‘surreal’ moments of the 21st century,» referring to what he called the «resignation of the United States as a world leader.»
This was the reaction of the former President after the announcement by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, of the launch from this same Thursday of what he called a response and commercial relaunch plan, which will mobilize a total of 14.100 billion euros to mitigate the negative impacts of the trade war initiated by the United States and «weave a shield» to protect the Spanish economy.
In this context, Zapatero mentioned in response to questions from journalists that, on the one hand, the message from the President of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, seemed «reassuring» to him, as he believed it was «impressive» that Trump is leading a «protectionist» movement and «against free trade.» «Certainly, if I were a person on the right, I would be tremendously confused,» asserted the former President.
On the other hand, regarding the assessments of the President of Vox, Santiago Abascal, on this issue, he pointed out that «there are things that do not deserve to be answered» since «rarely» is there «such unanimity in all editorial lines,» including those of European or international spheres with a «condemnation,» which he said is «unanimous» due to the «damage» that Trump’s measures will entail «first for the economy of the United States.»
According to Zapatero’s analysis, this will lead to the creation of «new trade alliances» and a «resurgence» of opposition in the United States, which, in his opinion, «will happen soon» because the current situation «will not end well but cannot last.»
