Propuestas culturales para un verano activo en Andalucía

The Ministry of Culture and Sports, led by Patricia del Pozo, proposes a cultural summer with over two hundred activities in museums, archaeological sites, cultural enclaves, and libraries spread across the eight Andalusian provinces. These activities include flamenco and pop concerts, guided visits to exhibitions, theatricalized itineraries to archaeological sites, flamenco shows at the Generalife, encounters with young writers, and workshops for the whole family on diverse topics such as Andalusian gastronomy or magic in ancient Greece.

These proposals take place during the summer months, especially in July and August. However, since the arrival of summer in June, some of these activities can already be enjoyed in museums and sites in the community, such as the summer film series at the Andalusian Contemporary Creation Center (C3A) in Córdoba, which will feature a new title, ‘Cunningham’, on the 26th around the legendary American choreographer.

The scheduled activities are aimed at all audiences and age groups. For example, in Almería, there will be a workshop on twilight and night photography at the Alcazaba on Thursday, August 7, and Sunday, August 10, where participants can put into practice what they have learned during the activity. For older adults, there is a gastronomy workshop focused on Andalusian culinary heritage, scheduled for July 2 at the Almería Museum, which will also host guided tours, theatrical visits, and concerts ranging from flamenco to classical music during that month and also in August.

The cultural suggestions do not stop at the Andalusian Photography Center (CAF), where the exhibition ‘Here, by the water’ by Rafael Trobat will open on June 27, and the dialogue series of this space continues.

Visit by the Minister of Culture and Sports to the Cádiz Museum (Archive).

The Cádiz Museum offers workshops for children on July 8, focusing on making ‘Phoenician Stickers’ from museum pieces, and on July 15, different techniques for approaching portraiture, with the intriguing title of ‘Filters when there were no filters’.

In Córdoba, the proposals at the Medina Azahara Archaeological Site stand out, where from June 21 to September 20, there will be night visits and theatricalized itineraries from July 11 to September 20, with two sessions each night. The site will also host concerts, such as the one commemorating the 7th anniversary of the World Heritage declaration on July 4, or the concert by Enrike Solinís, one of Spain’s great interpreters of baroque music, on August 7.

The Córdoba Archaeological and Ethnological Museum offers workshops for children, such as one on food and bread in prehistory on July 4, where they can make their own sweet and savory pieces from grinding to baking, and another on making slings, a tool associated with Iberian traditions and mythology, on July 11. In addition to the film series, the C3A is organizing an encounter with electronic culture ‘Electrolunch’ this summer, two dance proposals, and a program of workshops for the whole family during June and July.

Exploring some of the main archaeological sites in the province is the goal of an activity organized in Granada, where interested individuals can access guided tours of the Fuente Nueva (III) sites in Orce, the Argaric settlement of the Cerro de la Encina in Monachil, the Roman villa of Las Gabias in the capital of Granada, and the Moclín Castle, one of the best defensive fortresses of the Nasrid era.

What does the museum smell like?

Additionally, the Granada Archaeological and Ethnological Museum has organized a series of activities around scents, where participants can recognize the smell of the museum or objects from prehistory and Al-Andalus. For children of different ages, the Granada Fine Arts Museum has prepared workshops in July to learn drawing techniques, cutouts, dioramas, or make badges.

Among the proposals in this province, the cycle presented by the Ministry at the Alhambra under the title ‘Lorca and Granada in the Generalife Gardens’ stands out, including ‘Call me Lorca’ from August 1 to 16, a new show directed by choreographer and dancer Manuel Liñán, National Dance Award. The program for this cycle, managed by the Andalusian Agency of Cultural Institutions, also includes various recitals with renowned flamenco singers such as Miguel Poveda and José Mercé, among others.

Archaeology, specifically Tartessos, is the focus of a children’s workshop that the Huelva Museum will hold around the exhibition on the La Joya site, where children will learn about the process a piece goes through from excavation to display. Additionally, the museum offers theatrical visits and an escape room game for July and August.

In Jaén, activities have been organized such as a guided visit to the Oppidum, where visitors can enjoy the sunset at the archaeological site of Puente Tablas, as well as a magic workshop in antiquity to learn curiosities such as the origin of magic wands in ancient Greece. At the Jaén Museum, visitors can become anthropologists for a day in a workshop or surprise their acquaintances by acquiring knowledge in another activity on Andalusian pastry.

Perseids from the Antequera Dolmens

The Antequera Dolmens Archaeological Site in Málaga offers activities such as a workshop for children on prehistoric activities like hunting, role-playing games to discover the megalithic heritage, and a guided observation of the Perseids in August. The Málaga Museum also hosts workshops on diverse topics such as performing arts in ancient Rome, along with concerts by the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra and guided tours on trade in Al-Andalus and the role of women in the museum’s collections.

In the province, the celebration of the School of Young Female and Male Writers in Mollina, organized by the Andalusian Center for Letters (CAL), stands out, with the participation of thirty young people aged between 12 and 20 from different parts of Andalusia.

Finally, in the province of Seville, there are proposals that include stops in archaeology, such as the nighttime visit on ‘Mythology and Death in Rome’ organized at the Carmona Archaeological Site, or the cinema, with a series of historical-themed films to be enjoyed from July 18 to August 16 at the Italica Roman Theater.

These are complemented by activities for families, such as an ‘escape room’ at the Museum of Arts and Customs of Seville and concerts at the Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art (CAAC), including jazz performances during July and August, and pop and rock concerts as part of the PopCAAC series in September, featuring acts like Amaral and Loquillo, among others.

This museum center also hosts a summer film series focused on artistic creation, various children’s workshops, and eleven recreational activities under the ‘Project Owl’, starting on June 24 and continuing until September 5, with proposals ranging from art and nature to musical performances.

Also, at the Cartuja Monastery, specifically at the headquarters of the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage, a theatricalized nighttime visit is planned for June 26, and another specific visit in the Lego Cloister in September.

All these activities are complemented by those carried out by the eight provincial libraries and the Andalusia Library, hosting book club sessions and exhibitions during these months. These include an exhibition dedicated to scientific books at the Cántico Group Library in Córdoba or one focused on the trajectory of the designer ‘El Creata’ at the Provincial Library of Jaén. Additionally, activity continues in the network of public theaters in Andalusia.

Finally, the Barenboim-Said Foundation will conduct various workshops and courses during the summer, as well as concerts at the International Young Performers Festival in Baeza on July 15, and their participation with a quintet of students from the Orchestral Studies Academy at the International Piano Festival in ‘La Roque d’ Anthéron’, France.
