Obras de sellado del vertedero de Líjar, Almería, adjudicadas por 700.000 euros

The Department of Sustainability and Environment has awarded the contract for the sealing of the inert waste landfill in the municipality of Líjar in Almería for an amount of 700,000 euros. The awarded company is ‘Transformaciones y Embalses Parra, SL’, after completing the bidding process.

The Minister of Sustainability and Environment, Catalina García, emphasized that this project «is another example of the Junta de Andalucía’s strong commitment to improving the natural environment and proper waste management in the autonomous community.»

«From the Andalusian government, we have taken a step forward in the restoration of degraded spaces. By sealing this landfill, we have reclaimed an area with a high environmental impact and ensured that it will not become a source of uncontrolled waste disposal,» the minister pointed out.

The sealing of the Líjar landfill is part of the Integral Waste Plan of Andalusia 2030, a strategy that has promoted the closure and restoration of old landfills to prevent their reactivation and promote the environmental regeneration of the affected areas.

This project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and its main objective is to minimize the environmental risks associated with the inert waste deposited in this facility. The intervention includes the stabilization of existing waste, the covering of the ground with sealing layers and vegetative restoration, as well as the implementation of drainage systems to ensure proper control of stormwater.

The sealing of these landfills, financed by ERDF funds, is part of a comprehensive plan that foresees a total investment of 20 million euros in the closure and restoration of landfills in various Andalusian municipalities in the coming years. This action aims to reduce the environmental impact in the affected areas, restore the land, and prevent the proliferation of new illegal dumping sites.

«With each landfill we seal, we improve the environmental quality of the surroundings and promote a more efficient waste management, in line with European and national regulations, and with the circular economy model we have promoted in Andalusia,» she said.

The awarding of this contract represents another step in the work that the Junta has carried out in the province of Almería in terms of environmental restoration. In this vein, Catalina García recalled that recently the sealing works of the Albox landfill have begun, with an investment of 2.6 million euros, as well as in the Castro de Filabres, with 1.3 million euros, whose execution will start soon.

Furthermore, «we are pending the awarding of the works for the sealing of the Berja landfill, with over 2.2 million euros,» she added. Currently, environmental restoration projects for the landfills in Bayarque, Uleila del Campo, Lubrín are also being drafted, and the project for the sealing of Cuevas de Almanzora has been drafted and is pending approval.

«In Almería, we are working to address a historical environmental issue. Each of these projects represents an ecological benefit and also for the residents of the affected municipalities, who will have reclaimed spaces for other sustainable uses», she concluded.
