The Ministry of Sustainability and Environment has started improvement works on the Cañada Real de Los Vinateros livestock path, located in the municipality of Jérez del Marquesado, in the province of Granada.

This intervention, with an investment of 287,141 euros, is part of the new project for the Revaluation of the Livestock Paths Network as a Green Infrastructure for Territorial Connectivity in Andalusia.

The territorial delegate of Sustainability and Environment of the Junta in Granada, Manuel Francisco García, visited the works accompanied by the mayor of Jérez del Marquesado, José Ángel Pereda.

During the visit, García emphasized the importance of this action, which includes the improvement of a 3.15-kilometer section by crushing the deteriorated road surface, adding aggregate, compacting, planing, and refining. Additionally, two concrete junctions are being built with the GR-5104 road, facilitating the connection between the livestock path and the local road network.

«These interventions reflect the commitment of the Junta de Andalucía to the conservation of our natural and cultural heritage, recognizing livestock paths as an essential part of our identity,» the delegate stated.

He also stressed, as reported by the Junta in a press release, that «their recovery and organization are key to ensuring a sustainable future for our province in particular and Andalusia in general.»

This action adds to the investments made in the province of Granada since 2019, as part of the phases of the livestock paths improvement project. With the addition of this new project, the total investment in the province amounts to more than 5.6 million euros, aimed at improving over 150 kilometers of these green infrastructures.

The mayor of Jérez del Marquesado, José Ángel Pereda, thanked the investment effort of the Junta de Andalucía in his municipality, highlighting the positive impact these improvements will have on the daily lives of farmers and residents in the area. «These works not only improve the accessibility and safety of our roads, but also strengthen the link between rural areas and the natural environment that surrounds us,» he stated.

The Ministry of Sustainability and Environment maintains its commitment to the sustainable development of rural areas, ensuring that green infrastructures and their maintenance remain a priority in natural resource management. In this regard, the delegate recalled that «the works carried out so far are the starting point for an even greater objective; for livestock paths to not only be restored and maintained, but also revalued, providing economic, ecological, and social benefits to rural communities.»

Since 2019, the Junta de Andalucía has allocated nearly 70 million euros to interventions in livestock paths throughout the Andalusian territory. In the province of Granada, the network of livestock paths spans 3,698 kilometers, representing a significant portion of the over 34,000 kilometers that make up this network across the entire autonomous community.

«These investments reflect the commitment to rural areas and the Green Revolution initiated by the Andalusian government of Juanma Moreno,» García stated. «Maintaining the rich heritage of the Livestock Paths Network of Andalusia ensures its continuity for its traditional livestock and agricultural functions, as well as for tourism and environmental uses.»

The delegate concluded his remarks by highlighting the fundamental role of these paths as ecological corridors and connections between different natural environments. «Enhancing the role of livestock paths as ecological corridors, recreational areas, and connections between natural spaces is essential. These infrastructures allow for the genetic exchange of flora and fauna, while preserving an important cultural heritage linked to the territory.»
