Exposición sobre José Caballero abrirá actividades del centenario de la Generación del 27 en Andalucía

An exhibition on the legacy of the painter José Caballero (1913-1991), a reference of the artistic avant-gardes of the 20th century, will kick off the commemorative program for the centenary of the Generation of ’27 in Andalusia. The exhibition, which will be itinerant to other provinces, will start at the Museum of Huelva between November 2025 and February 2026.

This exhibition will also be the first activity surrounding the artist after the Minister of Culture and Sports, Patricia del Pozo, formalized in March the arrival of his collection with the Caballero-Thomas de Carranza Foundation to exhibit it in the future museum located in the old building of the Bank of Spain in the capital of Huelva.

«The exhibition will inaugurate the celebration of the hundred years of the Generation of ’27 through a fundamental figure of the group, the painter José Caballero, who maintained a close friendship with Dalí, Lorca, Alberti and many others, had an active role in La Barraca, was in charge of the scenography of ‘Blood Wedding’ and illustrated the magazine ‘Caballo Verde para la Poesía’ directed by Pablo Neruda,» Del Pozo stated.

In the opinion of the Minister, «the proposal will mean the reunion of Andalusia with José Caballero, whose figure will help us trace the cultural achievements of the so-called ‘Silver Age’, showing us from close proximity to many of its protagonists and bringing us closer to an outstanding artistic career based on surrealism and, to a lesser extent, cubism.»

On the other hand, Patricia del Pozo has announced that the journalist and writer Eva Díaz Pérez will lead the commemorative program of the Ministry of Culture and Sports for the centenary of the Generation of ’27.

The academic, who has important journalistic and literary awards, was in charge of the exhibition ‘Minervas of ’27. The magazines of a generation’ and recently coordinated the exhibition ‘The Machados. Family Portrait’, currently open at the headquarters of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) in Madrid. She was also the director of the Andalusian Center of Letters (CAL) between 2019 and 2022.

The philosophy of the celebration will have two argumentative axes. On one hand, all arts will be integrated, as the Generation of ’27 transcended the literary phenomenon to become a multidisciplinary map: theater, music, visual arts, architecture, flamenco, dance, and even sports. On the other hand, it will be articulated throughout the Andalusian territory, taking the activities to all the provinces, as each of them had a prominent role in the intra-history of the group.
