Medidas para ahorrar agua en el hogar

The General Directorate of Consumer Affairs of the Andalusian Government offers, on the occasion of the World Water Day, a series of recommendations aimed at consumers and users in order to avoid water wastage in homes. The goal is to raise awareness of the impact that consumption habits have on water expenditure. Therefore, consumers are encouraged to consider all necessary measures to promote rational and responsible consumption.

One of the main causes of water wastage – and potential damage to buildings and homes – is leaks and drips in the plumbing system and water access points. It is essential to periodically check the installations.

By adopting simple habits, you contribute to the goal of not wasting water. Among the appliances that use the most water for their operation are washing machines and dishwashers. When purchasing these appliances, it is important to pay attention to their energy efficiency labeling, which also details the water consumption per cycle, including the ‘Eco’ program, if available. It is advisable to use them at full capacity.

Do not throw garbage or food scraps in the toilet, as this increases the costs of water treatment. Likewise, it is essential not to pour used kitchen oil down the sink. It is estimated that just one liter of kitchen oil can contaminate up to 1,000 liters of water.

Another water-saving measure is to opt for a shower over a bath, and keep it short. You can turn off the tap while lathering your body, shaving, or brushing your teeth, and only use the toilet flush when necessary. Avoid letting the water run while doing other activities.

There are also many ways to make use of leftover water in various activities. For example, you can store excess water from showers or kitchen (when washing vegetables or boiling pasta) for watering plants.

To promote these habits and many others related to responsible and sustainable consumption, educators have access to various educational resources (learning situations) on the website www.consumoresponde.es, focusing on energy and water savings for students in Primary Education, Compulsory Secondary Education, and High School and Vocational Training), such as the ‘Savings Masters’ or ‘Water Bill’ programs.
