The Minister of Culture and Sports, Patricia del Pozo, has visited the works of the Huelva Sports City (CDH), where she highlighted that «after the recent investments made, the public facility in Huelva will become a benchmark of modernity, accessibility, and sustainability.»
In this regard, Patricia del Pozo pointed out that «a complete remodeling of the Huelva Sports City is underway to ensure excellence, offering citizens and athletes modern facilities adapted to current demands. This intervention makes the complex a role model in eliminating architectural barriers, aligning with the best practices in accessibility in sports facilities, avoiding the historical unevenness of the terrain.»
Del Pozo also stated that «this is an unprecedented investment in this city, totaling over nine and a half million euros to date, a comprehensive reform that was much needed and demanded, and also aligns with the goal of the Andalusian government to promote physical exercise among all citizens in the best possible conditions and spaces.»
The Minister also mentioned that the works on the indoor swimming pool and the new football field at the facility «are in their final stages, and we will have these two new spaces available starting in September.» Specifically, a grandstand has been added to the new pool, increasing the complex’s capacity to host short-course swimming competitions and larger events, as well as local and regional sports.
The indoor swimming pool has been equipped with a saline chlorination system, offering multiple benefits such as a more natural and healthier bathing experience, reducing skin and eye irritations, eliminating the strong smell of chlorine, and promoting sustainability by reducing the need for harsh chemical products.
Furthermore, the renovation of the structure and the implementation of a rigid air conditioning system will significantly improve environmental comfort and reduce maintenance issues associated with pressostatic structures, such as humidity and air recirculation.
The swimming pool program is housed in a single volume consisting of two interconnected prisms, one housing the 25-meter pool and its basement facilities, and the other containing the changing rooms and gymnasium. The entire building is spread over two floors. The access is from the upper floor, where the lobby, changing rooms, toilets, other general services, and the two pool basins are located. From this floor, you descend to the lower level at the height of the sports courts, where the gymnasium and utility rooms are located in a perimeter ring around the pool basins.
The artificial turf football field has been resized to comply with UEFA and FIFA regulations, allowing for the celebration of national-level matches. Additionally, cork has been incorporated into the surface, anticipating European guidelines and promoting healthier and more sustainable sports spaces.
The climbing area has also been expanded with the addition of a difficulty rock climbing wall, unique in southern Spain, meeting international standards for high-level competitions, positioning the complex as a reference center for this sport.
Moreover, over 2,000 square meters have been allocated for functional work areas, strength training, cardiovascular activities, and guided exercises, equipped with materials of the same quality as those used in the past Paris Olympic Games.
Comprehensive Reform
In addition to these first two phases nearing completion, the overall project of the comprehensive reform of the Huelva Sports City includes two more phases: a third one with a new access and control building, featuring four directed activity rooms and a sports medicine center, and a fourth one involving the construction of a new sports pavilion and the demolition of the old administration building.
The different spaces generated by each of the phases (pool and gym, administration building, and sports pavilion) will function as a whole once completed. The pathways and communications between them will be direct and clear, with access control centralized at a single point, the general administration building.
The Huelva Sports City covers a total area of 32,000 square meters and is located in the Parque Moret area of the city of Huelva.
