The City Council of Guadahortuna, the municipality in the Montes de Granada where a neighbor in his 50s was fatally stabbed last Monday, a case for which three members of his daughter’s in-laws are currently in provisional prison, has called for a citizen gathering this Saturday against violence and for security, requesting increased police presence in the town of around 1,800 inhabitants.

The announcement, shared through the municipality’s social media channels, as reported by Europa Press, expresses a strong condemnation «against the recent acts of violence that have affected» the town, stating that they have no place there.

«We make an urgent call to all residents to come together in a peaceful gathering to demand greater security and effective measures to ensure tranquility in our municipality,» the announcement states about an event scheduled for 5:00 pm at the town square in front of the pharmacy.

This is a citizen initiative to speak out in defense of the rights of the residents and «demand concrete actions from the relevant authorities,» also expressing «solidarity with the victims of violence.»

In addition to increased police presence and patrols, the organizers will ask for «effective strategies to combat insecurity,» showcasing Guadahortuna as «a united town committed to peaceful coexistence.»

Residents are encouraged to come «with banners, messages of support, and, above all, with the willingness to build a safer environment for everyone,» urging them to «make a difference together.»

The Investigating Court number six of Granada, acting in emergency, ordered this past Thursday the provisional detention without bail for the three detainees. The events occurred around noon last Monday in a confrontation between the two families, with the deceased being the father-in-law of the youngest suspect, who was arrested along with his parents.

The detainees, who have only answered questions from their lawyer, are being investigated for the alleged commission of a homicide and various injuries. The case will be handled by the Investigating Court number 3 of Granada, which was on duty when the events occurred, as detailed by sources from the Andalusian Superior Court of Justice.

Regarding the background of the case, the Court of Violence against Women number 2 of Granada decided last Monday to release the youngest suspect on provisional basis for the alleged commission of a gender-based violence offense. Although the wife of this detainee refused to report her husband and also declined to testify, the Court imposed a restraining order of 500 meters and a communication ban with his partner as a precautionary measure.

The case was brought before the judicial authority thanks to an official action by the Civil Guard of the municipality, and not through a complaint from the alleged victim. There is no record of previous reports of gender-based violence in the marriage.

The Civil Guard, the security force responsible for the investigation, reported that one of their patrols, tasked with accompanying and protecting victims of gender-based violence under the VioGén system, was returning to Guadahortuna from a hearing at the court with the daughter of the deceased on board the official vehicle last Monday.

Upon arrival in Guadahortuna, the victim expressed her desire to be dropped off at her parents’ house to the agents. Upon arrival at the said residence, the Civil Guards found «a brawl between several people» taking place.

Both families were in conflict following the complaint filed, and the Civil Guard identified that among the participants were «direct relatives of the victim and the alleged aggressor» registered in the Viogén system, so their priority was «to ensure the protection of the woman they were accompanying,» keeping her «in the vehicle escorted by one of the agents» while the other tried to «stop the fight.»

Subsequently, the individual registered in Viogén and two individuals who turned out to be his parents reportedly left the scene in a vehicle, and the agents assisted the injured while sharing the details of the fleeing car with their colleagues. They were later arrested at a service station near Guadix (Granada).

In the afternoon, the deceased victim’s body was removed, taken to the Legal Medicine Institute of Granada for an autopsy.

The City Council of Guadahortuna declared three days of official mourning and suspended all planned activities following this tragic event that has left the residents «in shock.» The two families involved in this alleged case of gender-based violence are from the municipality.
