Grupo de trabajo para descontaminar barriada Guadalquivir en Coria del Río

The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment of the Andalusian Government has announced the creation of a working group aimed at comprehensively addressing the environmental situation resulting from the presence of pollutants in the Guadalquivir neighborhood of Coria del Río (Seville). This initiative arises in response to the commitment made to the affected residents and to the Non-Legislative Proposal approved in the Andalusian Parliament, which urged the adoption of specific measures to ensure environmental quality and protect public health in this Seville locality.

Since 2021, the Ministry has promoted various actions aimed at analyzing and mitigating the environmental impact generated by the presence of contaminating substances in this area. In a first phase, a voluntary soil recovery process contaminated. Although the initial results were promising, contamination levels persisted due to the complexity of the terrain, located on the Aluvial groundwater mass of the Guadalquivir-Seville, which requires particularly careful actions coordinated with the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation.

The Territorial Delegation of Sustainability and the Environment in Seville has maintained constant contact with the Association of Affected by Toxins in Coria del Río to inform them about the evolution of the work carried out and address their main demands.

The creation of the ‘Working Group for the Decontamination of the Guadalquivir neighborhood in Coria del Río’ aims to coordinate efforts between the various administrations involved, as well as establish a framework for collaboration that allows for detailed monitoring of actions and continuous evaluation of progress. The group, which will meet on March 13 at the Territorial Delegation of Sustainability and the Environment in Seville, will include the participation of the City Council of Coria del Río, the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation, Emasesa, Aljarafesa, and the territorial delegations of Sustainability, Health, Industry, and Agriculture.

The decision to promote this group responds to the need to rigorously and systematically address the mandate of the Andalusian Parliament, which is expected to allow the design of effective and harmonized interventions that respond to the demands of the neighborhood, avoiding any actions that may jeopardize the integrity of the underlying aquifer or the ecological balance of the area.

Inter-administrative collaboration will be essential to ensure the success of this initiative. Therefore, the working group, after analyzing and diagnosing the current situation, will plan an action plan and design a calendar with regular meetings and sharing sessions to analyze the results obtained and determine the necessary actions at each moment. Special attention will be paid to the information and participation of residents, who have shown a proactive and collaborative attitude throughout the process.

The Territorial Delegation of Sustainability and the Environment in Seville reaffirms its commitment to transparency and technical rigor in managing this situation. The results of the measurements and decisions made within the working group will be communicated clearly and accessibly, in order to keep the public informed and ensure their trust in the actions taken.

This initiative reflects the willingness of the Andalusian Government to seek definitive solutions that ensure the absence of contamination that could cause any type of harm to the residents of the neighborhood, as well as to the air quality, soil, groundwater, surface water, and the environment in general.
