The Board of Directors agreed to register as Good cultural interest (Bic), at the request of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, in the General Catalog of Andalus Heritage with the typology of the monument, the sanctuary of Our Lady of Consolation in the town of Ohanes (Almería). It is an imposing neoclassical building, an example of rationalist architecture around which our Virgin of Our Lady has been celebrated since 1625.
This property, which will be protected with the highest protection digit, is located in the district of Ohanes, within the Southern Alpujarra in the Natural Park of Sierra Nevada. The volumes of the sanctuary exceed what is commonly seen, surpassing most of the parish churches in the region and marking a fundamental milestone in a landscape where it constitutes its identity.
The building, the work of the architect Juan Puchol, began construction in August 1800 on the basis of the previous one and completed its construction in 1804, although the ornamental works continued until at least 1811 with the sculpture of the main consolación on the facade. It consists of a single entrance on the south facade and has a centralized floor plan, characteristic of neoclassicism.
In addition to the values of architectural, artistic, historical, ethnological, landscape, and technical of the building, it is worth highlighting the representational values around this sanctuary and its titular Virgin of celebration already established since 1625. Therefore, throughout its history, the property has been the repository of a powerful devotion and worship to the Virgin of Consolation and before to San Marcos, the patron of Ohanes, which maintained a common ownership period. These traditions were passed down from generation to generation, offering the region as a whole, especially the municipalities of Ohanes and Canjáyar, a strong sense of identity and continuity.
Furthermore, they will also be protected for their connection with the monument, the sculpture of Our Lady of Consolation, the work of Granada -The Pilar de tices located on the main facade of the temple.
