Granada’s Local Police Chief, José Manuel Jiménez Avilés, has resigned following the raids conducted by the National Police’s Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit (Udef) this past Tuesday as part of a judicial investigation into alleged irregularities in the internal promotion and recruitment processes of this municipal security force.
The ongoing investigation by Granada’s Court of Instruction Number 4 under secrecy involves six officers from the city’s municipal security force who are under investigation, with the exception of the former superintendent who remains in his position, as stated by the city’s mayor, Marifrán Carazo, during a press conference at City Hall where she emphasized their «presumption of innocence.»
Carazo, outlining the measures taken by the City Hall in response to this issue, which includes requesting involvement in the case in court, has announced that following Jiménez Avilés’ «voluntary resignation,» she has instructed the initiation of the selection process for a new superintendent. In the interim period until the new appointment is finalized, which will be open to external candidates, three deputy superintendents will rotate in the role.
