A citizen platform and the town councils of Castril and Cortes, in the north of the province of Granada, have filed a complaint with the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament against «the intended continuation of the works of the Castril River transfer included in the new Hydrographic Plan of the Guadalquivir (PHG)2.
The Platform for the Defense of the Castril River, together with these town councils, stated in a press release after the informative presentation of the complaint, before the offices in Granada of the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation (CHG), that they are resorting «to the highest European instances seeking protection and justice» which they believe are being «denied in Spain».
«It is incomprehensible that 18 years after declaring the works as emergency, which was not the case, 14 years after the Supreme Court declared them illegal, the CHG continues to want to finish these works, despite there being more economical solutions that would not affect the Castril River,» they added, which is considered the «best preserved in Southern Europe».
They have emphasized that different species of fish inhabit the waters of the Castril River, including the common or Mediterranean trout, species that require «strict protection» and that «this action is intended to bypass».
COOPERATIVES SUPPORT IRRIGATION
Meanwhile, Faeca-Cooperativas Agroalimentarias de Granada has also expressed this Tuesday in a press release their firm support for the new project of water supply and irrigation of the Portillo reservoir, an initiative that they consider «key for the future of the agricultural sector in Castril, Baza, and the entire region».
The initiative, promoted by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, has been «paralyzed for more than 20 years due to various legal causes,» recognized by Faeca, which has requested that work begin, in line with this new project «resulting from the agreement, and respond to a historical demand from the area to be able to carry out the necessary modernization of the agricultural sector as soon as possible».
